Bop English – ‘Sentimental Wilderness’From Forthcoming Album “Constant Bop” Out April 17

Bop English releases ‘Sentimental Wilderness’, the second single from “Constant Bop” to be released on April 17 via Create/Control + Downtown.

LISTEN TO ‘SENTIMENTAL WILDERNESS’ HERE!

Bop English is the recording name of White Denim frontman James Petralli. ‘Sentimental Wilderness’ picks upright where “Dani’s Blues (It Was Beyond Our Control)” leaves off, a rollicking track that features thoughtful guitar leads and melodic synths that fit seamlessly over a soundscape that is very much timelessly rock & roll-oriented.

The ten tracks James decided on for the record demonstrate an encyclopedic knowledge of songwriting, revisiting everything from Bob Dylan and Jeff Lynne to LL Cool J and Santana for inspiration. Despite the fact that “Constant Bop” is full of disparate influences, under the spell of James Petralli it all makes for an incredibly coherent album. It’s a rich and diverse record that’s teeming with pop classicism and zippy rock ‘n’ roll. There are layers upon layers to explore on Constant Bop, with a serious attention to detail being applied to every track. Scrupulous and ever diligent, there’s a ton to unwrap on Constant Bop, a record that jumps from vocoder use on a ‘60s-jazz influenced jam to sampled 808-kicks on country numbers. It’s all there, and it’s all distinctly James Petralli.

The biggest difference between Constant Bop and any White Denim record is the amount of time James spent working on it by himself. There are over one hundred days of studio time preciously invested in Constant Bop, which ultimately reflects in its sheer quality. James found himself heading back to Constant Bop whenever he had the chance and, being free of the restriction of deadlines, he had a lot more room to experiment. Still, James is quick to point out “The musicians on this record still influenced and shaped the record significantly though”. Generally, the players would come in for an hour or two, learn the tune and then improvise on it. None of the record’s contributors outside of James ever met in the same room – the entire record was built brick by brick, sporadically but meticulously.

From start to finish, listening to Constant Bop is akin to embarking on a journey through James’ musical history, one that bears thrilling and enthralling moments each time the road twists and turns.

PRAISE FOR “CONSTANT BOP” “Deliriously easy to listen to” – The Guardian ★★★★ “It’s warm, comforting, slightly leftfield noise that welcomes all comers with something to cherish” – The Line Of Best Fit “A fast-paced, multi-faceted, furiously entertaining record that reveals hidden emotional depths? Chalk another one up to the man in White Denim” – Uncut 8/10 “Razor-sharp electrics and all-enveloping acoustics work a treat every time, but that doesn’t prevent from Petralli from finding something new.” – DIY

MANY THINGS New video ‘Holy Fire’ Debut LP due in 2015

n alien from outer space, an injured bride, an amputee-hipster and zombie army soldier make up some of the fascinating mismatch of characters symbolising society in Many Things’ video for new single ‘Holy Fire’.

Premiered by Clash Magazine, the apocalyptic clip is set in a postindustrial dystopian wasteland and was filmed in Amsterdam under the guidance of director Simon Green (XX Teens).

WATCH ‘HOLY FIRE’ HERE

Many Thing’s Macks Faulkron explains “The idea began with the birth of the gold alien coming to earth to preach the lyrics of ‘Holy Fire’. It came to life after many long chats with Simon and from our wacky imaginations and enjoyment of playing around with music and image”.

A barrage of electro sounds, driving percussion and call-and-response chants, ‘Holy Fire’ was inspired by Jon Hopkins’ notion of envisioning mixes as 3D shapes in infinite environments. The single is the first taste of their much-anticipated debut album “Burn Together” to be released in 2015 via Dew Process/Universal Music Australia. Many Thing’s forthcoming debut album “Burn Together” follows last year’s ‘What We Are’ EP which featured the tracks ‘Chains’ – selected as Zane Lowe’s ‘Next Hype’ – [WATCH HERE]; ‘Incredible’ [WATCH HERE]; ‘What We Are’ [WATCH HERE], ‘Gone’ and ‘Dear One’.

Du Blonde ‘Mind Is On My Mind’ Featuring Samuel T. Herring“Welcome Back To Milk” Out 22 May

Du Blonde has unveiled the latest track to be taken from her forthcoming album, “Welcome Back To Milk”, out on 22 May via Create/Control + Mute.

Listen to ‘Mind Is On My Mind’, featuring Samuel T. Herring (Future Islands) HERE!

Du Blonde explains, “I wrote ‘Mind Is On My Mind’ on the back of a motorbike riding down the Pacific Coast Highway in LA and had to remember it all the way from Topanga to Malibu. I was interested at the time in writing songs with no repeating sections, but rather a succession of acts. A couple of months later, Sam and I took a trip out to the desert and came back to LA to make some music. I played him the track and he got in the booth and ad-libbed his lyrics over the instrumentation. He was done in like one or two takes. When I was back in London I’d become obsessed with these Middle Eastern and Greek guitar scales and I added the lead guitar in the outro as a contrast to Sam’s vocals.”
Du Blonde is not a persona or a character, it’s Beth Jeans Houghton ripping it up and starting again. Welcome Back To Milk is the Newcastle-born and sometimes Californian based singer’s second album, but her debut as Du Blonde, and it’s a complete reinvention: new name, new sound, new band, new attitude – and attitude is the key word.

Where 2012’s debut “Yours Truly Cellophane Nose” threw everything at a song, “Welcome Back To Milk” strips everything back and is one massive release of pent up aggression, captured perfectly by producer and Bad Seed Jim Sclavunos. Heavy riffs, loud drums and vocal snarls contrast beautifully with poignant balladry and tenderness that fans of Houghton’s previous work will recognise.

Depeche Mode’s Martin Gore Shares ‘Europa Hymn’ Video From Forthcoming Album “MG”

Martin Gore, songwriter and founding member of Depeche Mode releases animated video for ‘Europa Hymn’, directed by London based collective M-I-E.
‘Europa Hymn’ – described by Noisey / VICE as having “… a strong soundtrack quality, with swelling synths” is taken from “MG” by MG, the evocative 16-track electronic instrumental album, out on 27 April 2015 on Create/Contol + Mute.

WATCH THE VIDEO FOR ‘EUROPA HYMN’ HERE

Written and produced by Martin Gore, work began on “MG” following the final dates of Depeche Mode’s ‘Delta Machine’ tour in March 2013 at Gore’s home studio in Santa Barbara. An entire instrumental album had been in his thoughts for some time, particularly since he has been writing instrumentals for Depeche Mode since 1981.
“I wanted to keep the music very electronic, very filmic and give it an almost sci-fi like quality,” Martin explains. “Music is a necessity for me. I go into the studio at least 5 days a week, every week, so once I had the idea and the template, the process was quick and fun.”
“MG” is a soundtrack to an emotional and mysterious film of your own design. From the Angelo Badalamenti-like atmosphere of Elk to the industrial electro swagger of Brink, it landscapes a unique and arresting vision.

Mas Ysa Returns With New Single ‘Look Up’, Out Now via Create/Control + Downtown Records.

Mas Ysa, the project of nomadic composer Thomas Arsenault, returns with new single ‘Look Up’, out now via Create/Control + Downtown Records.

LISTEN TO ‘LOOK UP’ HERE

Mas Ysa, born in Montreal but now based in New York combines love songs, unabashed ecstatic pop, prayer, field recordings and techno into triumphant, danceable, melancholy folk music that pummels the heart rather than dances around it.

2014 saw the February release of Mas Ysa’s critically acclaimed debut EP “Worth”. The same year also saw Arsenault taking his rig on the road, touring the country with Delorean, EMA and Hundred Waters, as well as performing at a number of festivals, including: SXSW, Primavera Sound, Pitchfork Music Festival, Fun Fun Fun Fest, Hopscotch, NOS Primavera Sound and Splendour In The Grass.
Mas Ysa has just announced his first live appearances of 2015 supporting Mercury winning Edinburgh trio Young Fathers on a full US tour with further details of full length LP to be revealed.

PRAISE FOR ‘LOOK UP’
“Oh Man, listen to Mas Ysa’s ‘Look Up’ and collapse into a puddle or something” – Noisey
“a brisk bit of folk-tinged electro-pop that bristles with energy and activity like a mind on overdrive” – Stereogum
“Hurtling drums and sheaths of synths propel the song forward, but the most distinct addition to Arsenault’s arsenal is an acoustic guitar that sounds like it was lifted out of an early-2000s Death Cab for Cutie song…. but the end result nonetheless displays a compelling growth in Mas Ysa’s craft.”

As their infectious latest single ‘T-Shirt Weather’ becomes an anthem for lovers-of-Summer the world over, Liverpool four-piece Circa Waves have today released their highly anticipated debut LP “Young Chasers” via Dew Process/Virgin.

Like the band itself, the 13-track album drops hit after hit featuring most recent singles ‘T-Shirt Weather’ and ‘Fossils’ (currently in rotation on triple j) as well as 2014 radio and festival favourites ‘So Long’, ‘Get Away’, ‘Stuck in My Teeth’ and title track ‘Young Chasers’.

Recorded at the historic RAK studios in London in 2014 with producer Dan Grech (The Vaccines, Lana Del Rey, The Kooks), the album is a thrillingly immediate, intuitive and anthemic collection which stands as testament to lead singer Kieran Shudall’s rise as one of the best songwriters in the UK right now.

Last year was a success-punctuated 12 months for Liverpool’s fastest-rising stars; one of the runaway successes at New York CMJ, the coveted opening slot on the NME Awards tour, performances in front of packed tents at Reading / Leeds and Latitude and a prestigious appearance on the 2nd stage at Glastonbury plus a euphoric sold-out UK tour in November confirmed them as THE most exciting guitar band in Britain right now.

Sarah Blasko and Nick Wales Release ‘Pain Is A Number’ “Emergence” To Be Released June 5 via Create/Control

Internationally acclaimed singer-songwriter Sarah Blasko and Sydney-based composer Nick Wales collaborate to release ‘Pain Is A Number’ from their forthcoming collective album “Emergence” out June 5 via Create/Control.

LISTEN TO ‘PAIN IS A NUMBER’ HERE

With its “raw and discordant beauty” (Broadsheet) and “brilliantly dark, driving experimental pop music” (Dance Australia), the single is the first sounds of the LP composed for the contemporary work of the same title by the Sydney Dance Company.
“Emergence” provides a stunning, sensual soundscape to the celebrated dance work, choreographed by Rafael Bonachela, the Artistic Director of Sydney Dance Company. Featuring the alluring costume creations of Australian fashion designer Dion Lee, Benjamin Cisterne’s super–sleek stage and lighting design and Bonachela’s mesmerizing dancers, The Australian, on opening night, accredits the relationship between movement and the bespoke music to the triumph of the performance.

Speaking to Broadsheet, Blasko says of “Emergence” – “Dance is so mysterious to me, I’ve done some music for theatre and really enjoyed stepping into another world.”

The “Emergence” dance work is one of three works to be performed as De Novo, part of the 2015 Sydney Dance Company programme. De Novo will tour to Northern territory, South Australia, Victoria and Tasmania in July and August.

PRAISE FOR “EMERGENCE”
“Why 37 minutes when 30 would do? The answer is probably that Rafael had so much good music by Nick Wales and Sarah Blasko that he wanted to use it all”’ – The Sydney Morning Herald
“The work is dense, sophisticated and intelligent, set to dark, driving music by Sarah Blasko and Nick Wales, and performed on a stunning stage by Benjamin Cisterne, who also designed the lighting.” – The Sun-Herald
“The drama of Nick Wales dirty, discordant composition and sound design, melded with Blasko’s poetic phraseology is fertile soil in which the choreographer and dancers can plant their feet. There’s a sense whereby lyrics, music and movement feed each other, in a continuous, co-dependent, self-perpetuating feedback loop.” – Crikey

SLAM (Save Live Australia’s Music) Activists Win Prestigious Sidney Myer Performing Arts Award

Helen Marcou and Quincy McLean have been named as recipients of the Sidney Myer Performing Arts Award Facilitator’s Prize for their contributions to the Australian music industry and creative arts practice. The annual Awards recognise outstanding achievements in performing arts.

Helen and Quincy are musicians, agitators and living proof that genuine and lasting change can be brought about if strongly enough desired. The Melbourne-based husband and wife are the owners and operators of Bakehouse Studios, which, since it’s founding in 1991, has put a creative roof over the heads of thousands of Melbourne’s music makers. In 2014 they started a bold art project within this working music studio that has brought together disparate disciplines mixing contemporary music with visual art, jewellers, taxidermists, shoemakers, photography, classical, fashion and even brought the humble rock poster into this realm.

In 2010, they formed SLAM (Save Live Australia’s Music) and rallied 20.000 people, changed laws and put live music firmly on the political agenda. Since then, they continue to volunteer thousands of hours to help shape Live Music policy nationwide and have been at the frontline of negotiations for the Victorian planning reforms in 2014.

“When we committed to forming SLAM we put our heads down with the expectation that if we had a rally that demonstrated the charm and character that we knew our music community had in spades, that if we finally got out on the streets and got to show these lawmakers what we had and if we made it big enough and strong enough we just might be able to change the direction. We thought we could bang some pots and pans in the streets, draw some attention and it’d all come good. We didn’t realize that in grabbing the ear of government, we’d find ourselves at the front of the campaign and we’d have to put our heads down for 5 years to sign off on all those demands.
We are so grateful, now that we come up for air, to be made recipients of this prestigious award that represents historically, from the famous Sidney Myer Music Bowl to the retail empire, philanthropy, and a profound nurturing of the arts.” Quincy McLean

Modern-European dishes will be created by Rowan and Janine Herrald (Terre) as well as delicious offerings from Matt Wilkinson (Pope Joan) and Ian Curley (The European).

Attendees can also create their own perfect picnic on the day by visiting the bespoke stalls and selecting from local cheeses, crusty breads, home-grown olives, sweet treats and plenty more. Danish psych duo “The Wands” release new single ‘She’s Electric’ off their debut album ‘The Dawn’ out May 1, via Create/Control | Smack Face Music.
The Wands are a Danish duo composed of lifelong friends, Christian Skibdal and Mads Gräs. The Danish part is more than just a marker of their national identities: it’s an indication of the unique niche they’ve carved out for themselves within the Scandinavian psych scene.

LISTEN TO ‘SHE’S ELECTRIC’ HERE!

‘She’s Electric’ takes you on a mid-tempo, neo-psych groove that’ pulses through the shrouded ambience. Take it from NME who say ‘The Wands are the aural sound of an acid trip at the blissed-out point when your arms appear to be made of rainbows’.

PRAISE FOR “THE WANDS”
“Hailing from Denmark, psych duo The Wands are the aural sound of an acid trip at the blissed-out point when your arms appear to be made of rainbows.” – NME
“The Wands always keep on the right side of pastiche by way of freak-fuzz guitars, churchy organ and ace tunes. Funny, serious and very groovy ” – Uncut Magazine (8/10)
“…although you could slap a revivalist label on these guys, The Wands are so much more than that — mostly because it’s obvious they’re actually really fucking talented.” – VICE
“Dizzying psychedelia, sparkling 60s vibes given a defiantly alternative twist by this Danish two piece.” – Clash

Andy Kim Teams Up With Kevin Drew To Release“It’s Decided” OUT NOW via Create/Control | Arts & Crafts

Andy Kim of “Sugar, Sugar” fame and Broken Social Scene’s Kevin Drew make the past contemporary in new musical offering “It’s Decided” OUT NOW via Create/Control + Arts & Crafts
“It’s Decided” transcends the many years of history within it. Andy Kim, the legendary songwriter and recording artist, renowned for 30 million records sold worldwide, with eternal #1 hits like “Rock Me Gently”, “Baby, I Love You So”, and The Archies’ “Sugar, Sugar”, has captured a vibrant new sound.

LISTEN TO SINGLE “SHOOT ‘EM UP BABY’ HERE

Surrendering to what Kim calls “the Magic & the Brilliance of Kevin Drew”, songs with the impeccable intuition of a Hall of Fame songwriter shimmer with Drew’s studio brilliance. Andy adds, “Although I’ve always held a childlike belief that my day was not yet done I never expected to live the love & passion that Kevin gave me & the creative process that has become my new album.

An early supporter of the release, Rollingstone.com said, “For the first time in the Montreal native’s roller-coaster career, he’s presenting himself less as an aspiring pop idol and more like your cool indie-rock uncle. The seasoned songwriter who once hustled his way into the Brill Building compound of Jeff Barry – with whom Kim authored the Archie’s classic “Sugar, Sugar,” 1969’s biggest hit – has found an unlikely ally in his current comeback bid: Kevin Drew of Toronto art-rockestra Broken Social Scene.

Co-written and produced by Broken Social Scene’s Kevin Drew and produced by Drew, Dave Hamelin (The Stills), and Ohad Benchetrit (Do Make Say Think), “It’s Decided” is the crystallisation of a creative music community around a living, thriving legend. Lead by Andy Kim’s wisdom, through his stunningly youthful vocals, the album’s ten songs are further accented by luminaries Kevin Hearn (Barenaked Ladies), John McEntire (Tortoise), Ron Sexsmith and Jeff Barry.

“Sail On” coasts on handclaps and a perfect chorus. The wistful “Shoot ‘Em Up Baby”, originally released by Kim in ’68 with “Sugar, Sugar” co-writer Barry, shows glimpses of the original’s ethereal doo-wop through bright new chiming piano.

From an interview with Pitchfork.com, Kevin said, “It’s not a sugar-pop record. This is a man who is singing about his mortality, moving on, getting older and the idea of trying to connect to an audience who’s possibly lost their parents or are dealing with friends going away. Andy’s really hitting something with that.”

The album’s closing song, “Who Came First”, was rewritten from the Social Scene archives and took on new and vibrant life once Andy Kim’s lyrics were added. The song shuffles upward with that familiar Broken sound of low, syncopated saxophone with Kim’s lyrics weaving in between a musical stew and then back again to a simple chorus. This collaborative effort is yet another example of the wide-eyed reinvention that is “It’s Decided.”

As Drew says, this is “Andy’s heartfelt want to still make it even though many would say his history is enough.” Gentle and enigmatic, ageless and ecstatic, Andy Kim always looks to transcend and find the honesty in what he does and does with others.”

Guantanamo Baywatch Release First Single ‘Too Late’
Australian Tour Dates Announced

Portland, Oregon’s Guantanamo Baywatch – a band that has built their reputation on wrangling up a ribald mishmash of classic surf instrumentation and brash garage rock release first single ‘Too Late’ of their forthcoming album “Darling… It’s Too Late” out May 15 via Create/Control | Smack Face Music. Guantanamo Baywatch have just announced they will be bringing their sleazy brand of surf rock to Australia for the first time ever this April – Full dates listed below.

LISTEN TO ‘TOO LATE’ HERE

The title track ‘Too Late’ is an enormous departure from the trashy Mummies-esque ruckus of their earlier recordings. Of course, the band hasn’t completely abandoned the rowdy surf rock of their previous releases. The track features backing vocals from soul singer Curtis Harding contributing to and rounding out the classic Motown ballad vibe of the track.
“Darling… It’s Too Late” the band broke away from their burying-the-needle-on-the-four-track sound and travelled down to Atlanta’s Living Room Recording (Black Lips, The Coathangers, Jacuzzi Boys) to track with Ben Coleman, Justin McKneight, and Ed Rawls. Guitarist and vocalist Jason Powell put the finishing touches on the album back at his Jungle Muscles Studio in Portland to keep that rough-hewn feel intact. But even when he and his bandmates Chevelle Wiseman (bass) and Chris Scott (drums) tread on their familiar territory with songs like ‘Raunch Stomp’ or their cover of Eddie & The Showmen’s “Mr. Rebel”, there’s a newfound clarity, punch, and swagger to their sound. Throughout the course of “Darling… It’s Too Late” the trio continues to f**k with various subgenres, from the dusty Western twang of “Corey Baum’s Theme” to the straight-outta-Sun Studios rocker “Do What You Want.”
Regardless of what micro-niche of Golden Oldies they tackle, Guantanamo Baywatch serve it up with a signature flair for irreverence and audaciousness that makes their sound wholly their own. It’s a respectful nod to the mavericks of the past, but also a swift kick to the nads of tradition.

Art of Sleeping Release Latest Single ‘Voodoo’ and Announce National Tour

After the success of the sold out ‘Crazy’ tour in January this year that left stunned audiences in their wake, Art of Sleeping release their latest single ‘Voodoo’ and announce an extensive national tour. Fans across the country will be able to hear the first glimpses of their eagerly awaited debut album – set for release mid-2015 via Dew Process / Universal.

LISTEN TO ‘VOODOO’ HERE

Capturing the band’s expansive arrangements and intoxicating lyricism, Art of Sleeping’s latest single ‘Voodoo’ is a superstitious anthem that sets a sensual soundtrack of unreciprocated heartbreak. Drums rattle, guitar’s soar and an imaginary wind howls as the song recounts a painful, wild love affair.

“The absolute power of something intangible. You fear it. You crave it. You love it. You hate it. Courage or insanity? There is always a madness in love. But without madness it would be calculated and false. I would sooner choose to flail at the mercy of the wind than to be smothered, safe and not feel a thing.” – Caleb Hodges

Known for their immersive live performances as much for their seductive sounds, the Brisbane five-piece will be embarking on their biggest national tour to date across 6 states alongside Adelaide’s singer-songwriter Jesse Davidson and Melbourne’s dream-pop multi-instrumentalist Sunbeam Sound Machine. Tour begins June 5th with tickets on sale 9:00am Wednesday March 18.

PRAISE FOR ‘ART OF SLEEPING’

4/5 Entertainment Presents TKAY MAIDZA

Sydney, Melbourne & Adelaide SOLD OUT PERTH AND ADELAIDE SUPPORTS ANNOUNCEDSupported by Acclaim With Special Guests UV Boi, JOY, Catlips and Problems

Selling out shows faster than she slays her rhymes Tkay Maidza has announced that tickets to the Adelaide and additional Sydney and Melbourne club dates on her M.O.B. tour are indeed “all gone lol” with Perth and Brisbane soon to follow.

Last night Tkay brought the roof down at the sold out Dew Process Label Party at Oxford Art Factory. She thanked her fans for “changing my life” and the love was reflected right back. The gig was a preview of what the international music industry can expect when she returns to the U.S. later this week for six shows at SXSW.

The Adelaide-based emcee added additional Sydney and Melbourne dates after her capital city shows sold out within hours of going on sale. Later the same day, Tkay was honoured to be named “Best New Talent” at the 2015 Rolling Stone Awards.
Tkay has also confirmed that the Perth and Adelaide shows on her M.O.B. tour will be opened by Catlips and Problems respectively.

Influenced by world music and down-tempo electronica, Problems mixes analogue sounds with modern production, resulting in a cross between the chill wave vibes of Washed Out and the worldly electronica of Bonobo.
Catlips, A.K.A Katie Campbell, is the producer and composer who has Perth on fire RN. Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane shows on the M.O.B. tour will be opened by 17 year old singer/producer Olivia McCarthy AKA JOY.

The opening acts will take to the stage before rising Brisbane star UV Boi who is supporting Tkay nationally.

It’s little wonder fans across the country have snapped up a chance to hear the creator of the self-confessed ‘brat-rap’ that has been the soundtrack to summer releasing her latest single ‘M.O.B’ and her internet-crashing mixtape ‘Switch Tape’ to her thundering stage presence at Laneway Festival, The Falls Music & Arts Festivals, Southbound and Beat the Drum.

“”M.O.B follows on from ‘Switch Lanes’, the single that earned Tkay her first placement on triple j’s Hottest 100 – though we suspect not her last.” – TRIPLE J
“Major buzz and serious talent.” – BUZZFEED
“If she can continue this streak of slick, party-ready rapping, she’s got a glowing future.” – PITCHFORK‘M.O.B.’ is out now via Dew Process and UMA. Purchase here
Tkay Maidza’s debut album will be released later in 2015.

It will be impossible not to dance along with Joywave – the indie rock band from New York – who will be performing ahead of their eagerly awaited debut album “How Do You Feel Now?”

‘Believe’ is released on the 27th April, and precedes the band’s third album, released on 4th May through Gentlemen of the Road/Island Records.

Wilder Mind was recorded at Air Studios, London and produced by James Ford (Arctic Monkeys, HAIM, Florence & The Machine). It features twelve new tracks, written collaboratively by the band in London, Brooklyn, and Texas. The Occupants
New Single ‘Alison’ Available now from iTunes
In mid 2014 The Occupants were approached to write a song under the proviso it was to be included in the soundtrack to an upcoming TV series about Gallipoli. The band dove straight into developing, refining and steering the demo they had in the direction of Gallipoli, and ‘Alison’ was born. The band finished the track, but during the process the soundtrack deal itself somehow evaporated and the need for their song was no longer required. You can listen to ‘Alison’ here.

Over the years the ANZAC story has been commoditised, appropriated, co-opted and over-marketed. Somewhere along the way, it also became a thing that politicians saluted to when they wanted to ring the ‘true Aussie patriot’ bell in the hope that the heroism of ANZAC would rub off by association. “I guess we, as a band, like to think that if there is a genuine stand to make now, then it’s in helping people who are fleeing war, violence, conflict and persecution overseas in this day and age. That might be something worth fighting for, even if our current government doesn’t think so,” says front man Flynn Gower.

With that in mind, the band are going to donate half of all sales of ‘Alison’ to the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre in Melbourne. “Given the amount of over-mythologising and flat-out jingoism that already exists around the subject matter of Gallipoli, we just didn’t want people to think this was some cynical ploy to cash in on all that,” explains Flynn.

With the song Alison, The Occupants have taken the liberty of experimenting with the freedom first offered by such an expressive and emotive mandate, while at the same time acknowledging the confined scope of the Gallipoli storyline serving as a kind of parameter-based challenge. Returning to the studio with producer Forrester Savell at Byron Bay’s Music Farm Studios.

Alison is available on iTunes now via Pavement Records here

National Australian Tour SOLD OUT

The return national tour of London Grammar has now completely SOLD OUT. The British trio won over hearts of Australian audiences after a career defining set at Falls Festival in 2013. Their dreamy twilight set took them from an emerging young band taking over airwaves around the country, to some of the world’s best live performers in league with Adele and Florence and the Machine (FasterLouder). London Grammar’s seminal debut album “If You Wait” has since been awarded iTunes UK Album Of The Year and nominated for Best Breakthrough Artist at last year’s Brit Awards, as well as most recently taking home the converted Best Song Musically and Lyrically award for ‘Strong’ at the Ivor Novello awards, not to mention raking up millions of views on Youtube [Watch ‘Hey Now’ Here] and launching hundreds of remixes. Joining London Grammar in some of the country’s most iconic venues will this year’s hottest young upcoming bands with the just announced Until the Ribbon Breaks and New York’s Wet. ‘Until the Ribbon Breaks is on the verge of something bigger’ says Wall Street Journal of the once solo project of talented producer and songwriter Pete Lawrie Winfield. Expanding to two more members the band deftly weaves synthesizers, electric guitars and digital percussion and Winfield’s moody, breathy falsetto that has won him famous fans, including Falls alumni and acclaimed hip-hop duo and now collaborators Run the Jewels [Listen to ‘Revolution Indifference’ Here]. Their ground-breaking album “A Lesson Unlearnt” has since skyrocketed around the Internet, garnering a global fan base and this tour offers Australian audiences their very first chance to hear it live. Brooklyn three-piece Wet have been not-so-quietly making disillusioned pop music with a laid-back and lo-fi elegance since the release of their self-titled EP. Electronic music has never been this bone-chillingly beautiful. Humble beginnings saw Wet begin as a long-distance collaboration between Providence, New York, and Los Angeles—long email threads of garageband demos and mp3s, but a showcase at 2013’s CMJ sparked a wave of interest in the trio, and the band signed their collection of what the New York Times called ‘majestically downcast love songs’ to Dew Process.

Melbourne Zoo Twilights Series 2015Conor Oberst Cancelled Due to WeatherTickets on sale now from: zoo.org.au/twilights

Due to wild weather, high winds and a dangerous electrical storm weather the Conor Oberst performance at Saturday night’s Melbourne Zoo Twilights Series was for safety reasons unfortunately cut short. Despite not wanting to disappoint fans the extreme weather conditions brought a halt to the exceptional set; which due to tour dates cannot be rescheduled.

Instead, ticket holders have a range of options open to them, including donating the value of their ticket to the recovery program that the Zoo is leading to help protect the Eastern Barred Bandicoot – a species now considered extinct in the wild in Victoria.

Bandicoots were once widespread across grasslands and grassy woodlands of western Victoria and South Australia. By 1991, the subspecies was on the brink of extinction, primarily due to habitat loss and predation by introduced foxes and cats. A captive breeding program was established using Eastern Barred Bandicoots from the last known population at Hamilton. Since then, a coordinated Recovery Program has focused on captive breeding, habitat management and predator control. There are currently three small-reintroduced populations of Eastern Barred Bandicoots. This year’s Melbourne Zoo Twilights Series aims to provide funds to create a 3.7-hectare soft-release enclosure at Werribee Open Range Zoo – ensuring that they are re-introduced to the wild in a protected way.

Ticket holders are also able to swap their tickets to the access the remaining Zoo Shows including ARIA-award winning Dan Sultan on Thursday 5th March or the legendary disco group The Village People on Friday 6th March. Refunds are also available until Monday 16th March 2015.

Martin Gore Releases Stunning Instrumental Album “MG” Out April 27

Martin Gore, songwriter and founding member of Depeche Mode, announces the release of “MG”, an evocative 16-track electronic instrumental album out on 27 April 2015 on Create/Control + Mute.

After finishing recording “MG”, Martin asked Q to mix the album, which seemed a perfectly natural choice as he previously mixed VCMG, Martin Gore and Vince Clarke’s 2012 album, ‘SSSS’.

Explaining the decision to release the album under the acronym, “MG”, Gore says, “As the album is very electronic and has no vocals, I felt it deserved another persona so decided to carry on the MG concept from the VCMG album.”

“MG” showcases another side to this multi-talented musician. “As a songwriter, I am aware of the power of words,” Martin admits. “Especially when they are juxtaposed in the right way with chords and melody. I am also aware of the power of pure music and the emotions that can be created by musical atmospheres and that is what I wanted to capture with this project.”
