Elliott Wheeler Debut Single Baker Man

By | Elliott Wheeler, Music News, News | No Comments
Elliott Wheeler Debut Single Baker Man Available digitally via MGM Distribution from July 5th
Debut album digitally and in store via MGM Distribution August 16th
Baker Man is the breathtaking debut single from critically acclaimed Australian composer and producer Elliot Wheeler, taken from his debut solo album The Long Time, due in store via MGM Distribution on August 16th 2013. A project some six years in the making, the album has an understandably cinematic feel, which is exemplified by ‘Baker Man’. Opening with a warm, delicate piano melody, Wheeler’s falsetto soon takes hold of the listener. A beautifully understated track, ‘Baker Man’ expertly builds from this opening into a sprawling piece, adding a perfect orchestra of instruments. Taking on the role as composer and engineer on the record, much of the playing was down to Wheeler’s own multi-instrumental abilities. One of the figures behind the music featured in Baz Lurhmann’s adaptation of F. Scott Fitzerald’s The Great Gatsby, Wheeler boasts an impressive musical back catalogue.

Working as Arranger and Additional Music Producer, Wheeler collaborated on material with all of the film’s artists – among which were the likes of Jay Z, Lana Del Ray and Jack White – as well as providing original additional music for the film. He also arranged and recorded the orchestral elements in the new Florence + the Machine single, Over the Love, from the upcoming Great Gatsby soundtrack album. Prior to this, the talented classically trained composer has also worked on new Cannes-bound short film Yardbird, Australian comedy series The Chaser, and George Miller’s new Mad Max feature, Fury Road, in addition to writing music for documentary and animation that have landed Wheeler many prestigious awards.Describing his own sound as ‘Morricone meets Portishead via Cinematic Orchestra’, certainly goes some way into defining Wheeler’s new single. Drawing upon other comparisons, acts such as Anthony and The Johnsons and Nick Cave can all be heard – the latter of which Wheeler has a particular link with, having produced and arranged the ‘Ship Song Project’ for the Sydney Opera House in 2011.

‘Baker Man’ features a stunning hand-animated undersea video, created by Sydney based AACTA Award winning animator Marieka Walsh which can be seen here :https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x51lDBPTDxU&feature=youtu.be

Baker Man will be available digitally from July 5th, through MGM Distribution.

The Long Time will be available digitally and in stores from August 16th, through MGM distribution.

Darling Downs

By | Darling Downs, Music News | No Comments

And all was wonderful, new and strange in the days when the world was wide –  Henry Lawson

Sometimes the most powerful music is the simplest.

The Darling Downs is two men, one mission. A duo with the power of a band, with Ron S. Peno’s majestic vocal beautifully complemented by Kim Salmon’s expressive playing.

The third offering from The Darling Downs, In The Days When The World Was Wide, is their first album in six years. A career-retrospective Kim Salmon residency at Fitzroy’s Old Bar reunited the pair in 2012. “We never broke up,” Ron says, “we just had a break.”

As Ron sings in There Were Tears, “the road never ends”.

The Darling Downs is two artists who need no introduction: Kim Salmon (Scientists, Beasts of Bourbon, the Surrealists, Salmon, The Business, Precious Jules, Antenna with Dave Faulkner, and Runaways with Spencer P Jones) and Ron S. Peno (Died Pretty, Ron S. Peno and The Superstitions). Two artists who refuse to rest on past glories, continuing to plough the fields, creating new material.

In The Days When The World Was Wide harks back to a simpler time, a time when anything seemed possible. “Oh, the times were brighter then,” Ron reflects in There Were Tears, “and the world was our friend.”

The title comes from one of Ron’s favourite books, a collection of Henry Lawson’s work, which Ron’s older brother, Billy, presented to Ron when he was still at school.

Kim and Ron have been friends for more than three decades. They met in Sydney in 1982 when the Scientists were doing a residency at the Vulcan. Years later, after a Surrealists show, Ron greeted Kim backstage. “Kim,” he suggested, enthusiastically, “we’ve got to make a country record together!”

“I wasn’t sure if he was just drunk, or if it was just something to say,” Kim recalls, laughing. But when Ron relocated to Melbourne in 2003, Kim got in touch. “Maybe it’s time we made this country album?” The result was The Darling Downs’ acclaimed debut, How Can I Forget This Heart Of Mine? “The experience mesmerises,” declared The Age. Ron and Kim donned suits and ties – “The Louvin Brothers meets GQ,” laughs Ron, who dubbed the sound “country-politan”. A second album, From One To Another, followed in 2007, and was described as “Appalachian jazz”.

In The Days When The World Was Wide sees Ron and Kim’s work augmented by contributions from Mike Stranges and Julitha Ryan. This time around, Ron says, The Darling Downs have moved on in time and space, from Appalachia of the 1940s to Greenwich Village of the ’60s. The record was produced by Ron, Kim, Mike and Soundpark Studios’ Idge (Andrew Hehir), and funded by “benefactor” Barry Williams, a fan who urged Ron and Kim to return to the studio.

“It’s a songwriting cliché to say ‘the songs come from somewhere else’,” Kim says, “and I normally refute that idea. But I cannot explain why writing with Ron works; it’s mysterious. And because it’s mysterious, it seems quite magical.”

Ron considers the album a career high, one of the finest things he’s done. “I don’t like everything I do,” he says, “but I’m really proud of this record. I can’t stop playing it.”

The album is filled with striking imagery. “Will our tears grow cold,” Ron sings in Like Desire, “falling down through the showers like flames in the snow?”

These are songs “drowned in the sorrows”; magical melodies mixed with a high lonesome sound. Tales of redemption (“I’ve been saved,” Ron intones in the opening cut); longing and lament (“When I needed healing, all I got was pain”), joy (“no light ever shone oh so bright”); and searing honesty, with “our hearts laid bare.”

The album opens with the sophisticated pop of Saved, a mix of Pet Sounds and Burt Bacharach, and closes with a rousing recital of country gospel called Light Of The World. “Kim says it sounds like I’m singing, ‘I am the lie of the world,” Ron smiles. “I like that. It’s the good and evil, and people can choose which one.”

These are simple songs that stir the soul. A potent mix of folk, bluegrass and indie rock. The Darling Downs take you to another place. In The Days When The World Was Wide.

Tex Perkin & The Dark Horses New Album – Everyone’s Alone

By | Music News, News, Tex Perkins | No Comments
In Store through Dark Horse Records / Inertia November 2nd 2012 Tex Perkins & The Dark Horses Australian Tour Tix on Sale Now
“Think of it – six mighty men of rock who like to roll tobacco/snares/home, each taking a back seat when they need to, practically doing a Victorian-era “After you, my good man,” when only a slide guitar is needed, or a shimmering organ or a lightly-shaken tambourine.” Herald Sun
Tex Perkins has shown us many faces over the journey.

Front man for the evocative soundscapes of The Cruel Sea and the hard edged pub rock of TheBeasts of Bourbon, collaborator on the Tex, Don and Charlie outings, and compadre to Tim Rogers on the TnT project.  More recently seen leading the Tennessee Four in a night of memorable music in his turn in the Johnny Cash musical The Man In Black, Tex is now back once again to the lilting, dark country of Dark Horses, returning this October / November with a new LP, Everyone’s Alone and a select run of tour dates in support.

Everyone’s Alone shows yet another direction for the enigmatic singer/songwriter, while still filled with Perkins’ trademark gravel-tainted vocals and poetic reveries, this record is a mature, poignant follow up to 2011’s Dark Horses self titled debut.

The live set promises, as always, to be something special. Perkins’ world-weary growl will showcase songs from the new album, alongside gems like – “I know You Know I Know”, “Splendid Lie”, “Real Love”, A Name On Every One” and “She Speaks A Different Language”.

Join Tex Perkins and fellow Dark Horses – Charlie Owen, Joel Silbersher, James Cruickshank, Murray Paterson, Stephen Hadley and Gus Agars as they come together to snake their way along the East Coast, playing some of the finest tunes your ears will hear in 2012, joined by one of Melbourne’s most affable songsmiths Mike Noga (The Drones) to support.

Recorded and Mixed by Roger Bergodaz at Tender Trap Studio, mastered by Steve Smart at Studio 301
produced by Tex Perkins and the Dark Horses.

Mama Kin New Single – Was It Worth It

New Single – Was It Worth It  In Store September 28th 2012

“a stand-up rock solid musician…this is a woman with talent” Rhythms Magazine

Out of the studio and on the road, Fremantle’s soulful raconteur Mama Kin, is bringing her new sound and expanded line-up to a venue near you.

With a widespread reputation for stirring live shows, Mama Kin returns to the stage with a swag of new songs that confront the veil between darkness and light.

Was It Worth It, the first single from her new album, The Magician’s Daughter, signals an expansion in Mama Kin’s musical palette. Was It Worth It ushers in a depth and potency underpinned by Mama Kin’s vocals that so spectacularly hover between vulnerability and power.

Cinematic at times, with lush arrangements and bold production, The Magician’s Daughter (due for release in early 2013) pushes Mama Kin’s own boundaries, challenging her trademark sound. Where her debut album Beat and Holler was a soulstress’ war cry, traversing the riotous and the raw, her sophomore album takes us deeper into the human condition, where the magic lives.

“I got used to the idea that I have to be out of my comfort zone to make the kind of art I want to make, I have to feel pushed. I have to be on the edge to be able to jump in and get as deep as I want and need. Magic for me is when there is a transformation inspired by subtle forces, and this is what we aim to bring to our audiences.” Mama Kin

“a delicious hotpot of seductive melodies, stomping percussive beats and classic old-world instrumentation” The Sunday Mail

“really special, totally smouldering” The Sun-Herald

Mama Kin is on tour through September, October and November  tickets on sale through www.mamakin.com

Was It Worth It will be released nationally on September 28

The Magician’s Daughter is in store early 2013.

The Falls Debut Single Home From The Debut EP – Hollywood

The Falls Debut Single Home From The Debut EP – Hollywood
Available digitally and In store August 3rd independently through MGM Distribution

THEY MET. THEY FELL IN LOVE. THEY WROTE SONGS.
THEY FOUGHT. THEY MADE UP. THEY BROKE UP. THEY WROTE SONGS.

At a time when for most it would be the end of a relationship, for Sydney outfit The Falls this feels like just the beginning…

The first single Home, is a bitter sweet tale of escapism and the search for clarity, and the final realisation that no matter how hard you try and avoid life’s difficulties, in the end you must deal with them “it all comes back the moment I get home”.

It begins light and airy but builds naturally with simple production and with a final lift from a stirring string arrangement from producer Tony Buchen. It is a stunning example of two perfectly complimentary vocals melding together.

Almost subconsciously The Falls have documented their whole relationship in their songs. The love, the betrayal, the heartbreak. While at times it is hard for them to wear their hearts so openly on their sleeve, for The Falls, it has been a huge part of their songwriting.

In the fallout from Valentines Day, The Falls decided that rather than wallowing in self-pity they would put their heartbreak to tape. So they pulled out their little tascam 4-track portastudio, which, with all its tape wobbles and noise, aptly captured the fragility of their hearts. These fledgling recordings were just the beginning of what has become their debut EP ‘Hollywood’ (released August 3rd 2012 independently through MGM Distribution).

In late 2011, The Falls hit the studio with producer Tony Buchen (Old Man River, Andy Bull, WIM, Washington) to record ‘Hollywood’. The Hotel Hollywood in Sydney, has featured so strongly in their lives that it was inevitable that it would manifest itself in this way. For most of 2010 and 2011, it was where they could be found playing each week at a little, somewhat undiscovered, night of free music that emerged from the back streets of Surry Hills called Folk Club. It is also where they met, where they found their sound and where they wrote these songs.

In this intimate setting, the connection between these two onstage was palpable. Their emotionally fuelled live performances are compelling to watch, sometimes heartbreakingly so, garnering reviews such as “intoxicating melodies and gorgeous harmonies” and “(their) strength lies in their ability to convey raw emotion and wisdom in their lyrics”.

Buchen managed to imprint some of this Hollywood magic on each track, recording the reverbs for the EP down in the bowels of the hotel, in the downstairs men’s toilets. So, each song has on it a little Hollywood porcelain reverb or ‘pee-verb’ as they’ve been calling it.

With an unmistakable sound, barefoot collaborators and best friends The Falls are gently making a name for themselves in 2012.

“Beautiful harmonies, sweet as lyrics, warmth all round. I really love this. Those voices climb and soar so sweetly, and that toy piano comes in at just the right moment. A+.”

 Zan Rowe, triple j

The Jezabels Packing Out The Largest Headline Shows Of Their Career

By | Music News, News, The Jezabels | No Comments

The Jezabels returned home last week for a whirlwind two-week national tour, kicking off with their largest headline show in Melbourne to a packed out Festival Hall last Friday night.

With Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth now done, the imminent shows in Brisbane and Sydney will be the last opportunities for fans to see the band live in 2012. They will spend the rest of the year touring through the UK, North America, Europe, and Asia, gracing stages at Lollapalooza (USA), Osheaga (Canada), T In The Park (Scotland), Pukkelpop (Belgium), Electric Picnic (Ireland), and Bumbershoot (USA) among others.

“The phrase ‘a band to keep an eye on’ is one that seems to be thrown around quite loosely these days, often setting an expectation that is just too high for some up-and-coming bands to meet. But every so often the prophecy is realised, and the ‘band to keep an eye on’ becomes the ‘band you can’t keep your eyes off’. If they haven’t already proved to Melbourne that they are one such band, The Jezabels certainly did it at Festival Hall on Friday night….From start to finish, the band sounded polished and cohesive….Their performance was faultless, and with their steadily swelling fanbase – both here and overseas – it will be fascinating to see where they go from here.” Fasterlouder

“While Hayley Mary offers the visual allure of a black BMW M3, her band are the expert German technology under the hood that make this baby fly. You only need to hear how the disparate sounds of keyboardist Heather Shannon, drummer Nik Kaloper and guitarist Sam Lockwood mesh together on Mace Spray to confirm The Jezabels’ extraordinary rule-breaking composition, while Trycolour and Dark Stormalso thunder like a cantankerous squall. As Hayley Mary gets stuck into ‘rubbin’ them titties’ during City Girl, Lockwood’s atmospheric echoes sparkle like The Edge at his best.” Rip It Up

“The drums start us of, three flashes of blinding light and it’s begun with Endless Summer, the instantly uplifting number that demonstrates the sheer power of Hayley Mary’s vocals, which are quite simply staggering.” Themusic.com.au

“Sam Lockwoods gritty guitar is like a bad ass, back handed compliment to Marys spectacular voice, especially as they belted out ‘Try Colour’ and ‘Endless Summer’ and there was no question that the crowd loved it.”  Vulture Magazine

“ After one and a half hours of musical bliss, the last song finished the set on a note just as strong as the beginning, leaving the enamoured crowd pining for more.” Small Werld

The Jezabels New Single – New Film Clip – City Girl

By | Music News, News, The Jezabels | No Comments
Adored Sydney quartet The Jezabels will release the fourth single, City Girl, off their AMP Award winning debut LP Prisoner, just in time for their mammoth national tour that kicks off June 1st at Melbourne’s Festival Hall.

City Girl stays true to the bands distinctive style, an emotive ballad layered with thundering drums juxtaposed against an elegant backdrop of strings, guitar riffs, and keys, each lucid element driving home the bands captivating charm.

You can see the film clip for City Girl, along with behind the scenes tour footage and past film clips here:
http://youtu.be/3pThySyLmBQ

It’s no secret that The Jezabels deliver uninhibited live shows – ones that have sold out tours through the USA, Canada, Europe and currently the UK. These performances have also earned them slots at festivals including, Electric Picnic,Pukkelpop, T In The Park, Osheag, and recently announced Lollapalooza.

“With each soaring, emotive note, Hayley Mary makes up for Australian rock’s long-standing lack of strong female singers. Despite her pixie dimensions, The Jezabels’ vocalist commands the stage with an easy authority. No wonder they have the confidence to play by their own  rules … When the group focus their energies, they hit on a winning clarity with the stern pop of ‘Endless Summer’, as stark as New Order’s most crystalline moments.”
The Indepnedent  – London UK

Be sure the catch the band performing live as they tour nationally in June, these shows are the bands most ambitious to date and are set to be a visual and aural extravaganza not to be missed – tickets on sale now.

City Girl is available on The Jezabels’ debut LP Prisonerin store now independently through MGM Distribution

Feel Presents Henry Rollins

With a number of shows already sold out, and the rest on the verge of being so, Feel are proud to present a fourth and final Melbourne show for Henry Rollins: Saturday 21st April. Tickets on sale April 11th!

And joining Henry for this and most East Coast dates * will be Australian comic Bruce Griffiths.

“He lays jokes upon the audience that if your dad told would be cringeworthy, yet coming from someone with impeccable comedic timing works effortlessly. The final sign of approval? Someone is awkwardly laughing way too hard after the crowd has stopped. He leaves with rousing applause, even if few knew who he actually was.”
FASTER LOUDER (2011)

And for those of you that can’t get enough of Henry, you can catch him for free when he swings by to check in with the folk from The Project (TEN) on Tuesday April 17th from 7pm and also on Adam Hills in Gordon St Tonight (ABC) on Wednesday April 18th from 8.30pm. Meantime…

“For a bum-numbing two hours and 45 minutes, with not even a pause for a sip of water, the fifty-year old raconteur took the capacity crowd on a captivating mammoth tour of his life and the world as he sees it, and while he is not a comedian the material is in places as laugh out loud as it is enthralling.”This Is Bristol

“Drawing in a mixed crowd, we were surprised by those in attendance. From the younger fans – proudly wearing their Black Flag t-shirts – to those who could easily be picking up their pensions, it goes to show that Rollins’ appeal somehow reaches many generations. Whether you’re a fan of Black Flag or not, Rollins and his spoken word is well worth the ticket price. Time after time he gives an eclectic performance that’s high energy, and never boring. Fingers crossed he’s doing the UK festival circuit again.” Bring The Noise

Dig It Up! Melbourne Expands Sydney Adds Mystery Band

By | Dig It Up, Events News, Music News, News, News | No Comments

Feel, Max, SPA, Time Out Sydney & Melbourne Present Dig It Up!
Melbourne Expands Sydney Adds Mystery Band.

Dig it Up! the ever-evolving series of national concerts curated by the Hoodoo Gurus and conceived by Feel Presents, continues to roll out the surprises with the announcement today of two new participating venues for Melbourne and a mystery act confirmed for Sydney.

The Pony Bar in Melbourne (68 Little Collins St and a short 5 min walk from The Palace) will open it’s doors at the earlier than normal time of 3.00pm on Anzac Day playing host to Hoodoo Gurus’ compadres Kim Salmon and Spencer P. Jones as well as young Geelong act The Murlocs. Kim and Spencer will perform a solo set each as well as a double act while The Murlocs (featuring Broderick Smith’s young son Ambrose on vocals and harmonica) will perform a set of their blistering r’n’b. Get in early!

http://www.singhalamusic.com/the-murlocs/

A revolving cast of local celebrities will also DJ at Pony during the day while in the Palace main room featured DJ’s will include Mikey Young (Eddy Current Suppression Ring) among others.

And as it is with Sydney, the Melbourne Dig it Up! will now house a venue dedicated to comedy when the Spleen Bar (41 Bourke St and across the road from the Palace) opens it doors with featured comedians and fellow rock tragics Dave O’Neil, Andrew Goodone and CJ Fortuna.

Good enough for ya?

Sydney meantime, has snared seminal act Kids in Dust to complete the line-up of live activity. Kids in Dust performed just once, appearing at the Sydney Trade Union Club in the early 1980’s, but appeared many other times under another name. Dig It Up! is sworn to secrecy over the true identity  of Kids in Dust, suffice to say fans of the genres represented by Dig it Up! are in for a massive surprise come 3.30pm April 22nd.

And joining Kids in Dust as the latest additions for Dig It Up! Sydney will be audio / visual collective Sounds of Seduction plus DJ’s Jack Shit, Silky Doyle, Andy Travers, Nic Dalton and Stuart Coupe all brought on board to keep the party going.

In other Sydney Dig it Up! news all reserved seating tickets have now sold-out. General admission or dance floor tickets are all that remain – who’s complaining?

Oh, and if you didn’t already know it, Gold Watch: 20 Golden Greats, the new best of from the Hoodoo Gurus featuring the new single Use By Date, is on-sale now. Check the new TV ad for the goodness. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJiFWzybd5U&feature=youtu.be

The Fearless Vampire Killers Announce Batmania National Album Tour

By | fearless Vampire Killers, Music News, News | No Comments

Announce Batmania National Album Tour and New Single I Won’t Stay Too Long

Batmania is out now through Shock and IWSTL is available on itunes for digital download

I Won’t Stay Too Long is the next single from The Fearless Vampire Killer’s impressive debut LP, Batmania. This barefaced song encompasses the vibe of the 70’s as much as it does the sound.  The retro surf-rock tune is “essentially about one night stands; being young and having flings with people just for the sake of it and in the end nothing really matters because we’re in our youth and we have all the time in the world to destroy relationships and start new ones. It’s the mentality of thinking you’re invincible really.”

Staying true to the sound that we have come to know and love, I Won’t Stay too Long is layered with musical texture that barrels through to a powerful finish and reinforces the claims that TFVK are “one of Australia’s greatest hidden gems”.

2012 has kicked off at a cracking pace for the band. With For You & Me recently on the American TV series 90210, TFVK are beginning to make a name for themselves internationally.

The Fearless Vampire Killers will be hitting the road in March with what J Mag have dubbed a “Brilliant Monster”. Batmania explodes lives, so be sure to catch them on any (or all) of the dates below.

Album Reviews

“Find the next party these lads crash to see them in their element.”

TRIPLE J MAGAZINE

“What makes The Fearless Vampire Killers more than just tasteful recyclers, however, is not just their animal energy and ruffled charm but the inherent worth of their tunes. The songs are as strong as their influences, which is saying quite a lot.”

MESS+NOISE

“Their drugged-out take on surf-garage rock is lively and entertaining”

3.5 Stars ROLLING STONE

Live reviews

“Serving up their psychedelic rock, The Fearless Vampire Killer’s lead vocalist Sean Ainsworth was able to smash down the barrier between band and punter with his engaging presence.”

TONE DEAF

“The quartet rock a big sound and make full use of every opportunity to harmonise and unleash sweeping guitar solos.”

RAVE MAGAZINE

“They dabble in skiffle, they flirt with rockabilly, they really, really, really like Revolver era Beatles, and they sounded totally boss. A great set of tunes lifted from their latest recorded work Batmania played with conviction and just the right amount of abandon to make them feel dangerous. A Highly enjoyable addition to the bill.”

The Jezabels Australian Tour – June 2012

The Frontier Touring Co, triple j & Channel [V] by arrangement with Artist Voice Present

The Jezabels Australian Tour – June 2012
with special guests LIGHTS and Snakadaktal*

New Single – Rosebud

It has been a bumper summer for The Jezabels with ARIA and APRA Award nominations and AIR Award wins for their ARIA #2, gold selling debut LP Prisoner, and record audiences at the Falls Festivals and Big Day Out shows nationally. They took home the gong for Album Of The Year at the 2011 Rolling Stone Awards, secured a number 10 position with their single Endless Summer in the triple j Hottest 100, and have been short listed for the AMP Award.

In 2012 they continue with their relentless schedule of international touring and will see the release of Prisoner in the US, UK, Europe, Asia and Canada after already playing sold out shows in those territories.

The Jezabels will return to Australia in June for their most ambitious tour to date.

“Some artists who’ve enjoyed a steep upwards trajectory come unstuck when first attempting the voluminous space of The Forum, but on the evidence of this powerful, enthusiastically received show – the first of three at the 1500-capacity venue – The Jezabels have no such problem.” – The Age

“it’s Sydney indie-pop quartet The Jezabels that pull the biggest crowd of the weekend. Their debut album Prisoner has blown up here … it’s clear that they are outgrowing their winsome beginnings to become a band that matters.” NME – at Southbound 2012

“The full-length US debut by this Australian quartet is a fresh blast of vintage turmoil: a robust spin on the echo-laden romanticism of early-Eighties New Wave rock …The songs are intrepid dissections of desperate connection (“City Girl”, “Nobody Nowhere”). The result should be the start of beautiful friendships here.” David Fricke, Rolling Stone USA

Canadian electro rock sensation LIGHTS (www.iamlights.com) will be bringing her Juno winning dream-step, grit-pop sounds to support, alongside Melbourne triple j Unearthed darlings Snakadaktal.

Rosebud is available on The Jezabels’ debut LP Prisoner

Pajama Club New Single – TNT For Two

By | Music News, News, News, Pajama Club | No Comments

Pajama Club return to Australia this week to play St Jerome’s Laneway festival shows nationally, kicking off in Brisbane this Saturday. To soundtrack their trip, they are releasing a brand new single!

TNT for Two is a hauntingly beautiful, bass driven track, featuring Gregorian tinged harmonies by Sean and Neil towards the end. The band are putting the finishing touches on the film clip this week, check out some photos of the session here…. http://www.facebook.com/PajamaClub

You will also find the glam-stomping Diamonds In Her Eyes in this package! Perhaps as close to a love song as this Club gets, a celebration of togetherness with a decidedly angular and distorted grin on its face. The perfect pop ending to their debut self titled album.

Check out TNT for Two live recording at Round Head Studios: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4U16fBw85nE

And watch the Pajama Club’s self titled album Track by Track here:

Some praise for Pajama Club – Pajama Club

Anyone who has pondered just how Neil has crafted so many pop gems in his career will be no less impressed at how he has done so here, with just a handful of family grooves to work from.“ THE AUSTRALIAN

Only in the hands of Neil Finn – the antipodean Paul McCartney- can a lounge-room jam become a thing of such rich complexity. Finn and his wife Sharon started Pajama Club as an after dinner, wine fuelled lark: they’d bash out some songs in their self-titled debut is not as loose or indulgent its genesis implies. With the help of local muso Sean Donnelly, they’ve fleshed out these grooves into multi- layered psych-pop curiosities such as “daylight”, which proves that no matter how experimental he gets, Finn just cant keep a good melody down.” ROLLING STONE MAGAZINE

Pajama Club’s self-titled debut album (vinyl, CD, digital) is available in stores and online, independently on Lester Records.

Pajama Club will return to Australia in January / February to play St Jerome’s Laneway Festival, dates and details here www.lanewayfestival.com.au

    SLAM Goes National!

By | Events News, Music News, News | No Comments

National SLAM Day February 23rd 2012

On 23rd February 2010, the SLAM rally saw 20,000 people march through Melbourne to the tune of AC/DC’s definitive ‘Long Way to the Top’, in protest against the Victorian Government’s misguided policy link between live music and violence.  Out on the streets of our city, we showed our support and love for a truly great live music community.

The SLAM rally was the largest cultural protest in Australia’s history.

Now all of Australia has the opportunity to participate in a national event that celebrates our local musicians in our small venues.

    “Small venues were my university.”
    Paul Kelly, SLAM Rally speech

Music communities around Australia are now invited to unite in support of our thriving live culture by hosting their own National SLAM Day gigs – February 23rd 2012 will be a national day to celebrate live music in Australia!

Support your local artists and venues by getting out and experiencing the spontaneous excitement and intimacy you can only get at a small venue.

Support a National SLAM Day event in your town – any style, any genre.  It’s easy to get involved:

    • Venues can register their gigs on the SLAM website at slamrally.org.  It’s free to sign up.
    • Musicians can join with their local venues to curate a National SLAM Day gig.
    • Gig-goers can celebrate live music and local musicians in their own neighbourhood.
    • Community groups can host their own National SLAM Day gig.
    • “Like” SLAM on Facebook and keep up with news on live music: www.facebook.com/SLAMrally

    About SLAM

Save Live Australia’s Music (SLAM) is a collective of non-politically aligned, independent, local music-loving citizens.  The only pre-requisite to getting involved is a love of live music.

In early 2010, the SLAM Rally swept through the streets of Melbourne in protest against over-arching Victorian Liquor Licensing policies that unfairly linked live music to high risk activity.

SLAM representatives, the lobby group Fair Go 4 Live Music (FG4LM) and the then newly established Music Victoria, all co-signed the Live Music Accord on the eve of the rally and then spent a further seven months negotiating the Live Music Agreement, where it was officially announced that live music does not cause violence.

Since then, SLAM has successfully negotiated important changes within a number a number of other key music reforms in Melbourne.  SLAM has contributed to the Busking Policy and the Live Music Strategy for the City of Melbourne, the City of Yarra’s Live Music Working Group, and the Music Council of Victoria.

Supporters and spokespeople for SLAM have included Paul Kelly, Dan Sultan, Megan Washington, Nick Cave, The Dirty Three, Tina Arena, Clare Bowditch, Paul Dempsey, Kram, Tim Rogers, Nic Cester, Cut Copy, The Living End, Missy Higgins, Ross Wilson, Evelyn Morris (Pikelet), Brian Nankervis, The Rockwiz Orkestra, Slash, Myf Warhurst, Augie March and Mick Harvey, among many others.

“Live music coverage relates not only to artists, gigs or festivals, but also covers the galvanisation of the local community to ‘protect’ the live music industry .The formation of interest groups such as SLAM provides further evidence of the value attributed to live music by community members. The interest groups are a manifestation of community pride in the reputation and legacy of the live music industry, which they value as something ‘worthy of protection’.”

    Ben Salter ROAD WARRIOR

By | Ben Salter, Music News, News | No Comments

    RESIDENCY MANIA

After recently winning the award for Most Popular Male Artist at QLD Music Awards, Ben Salter is waving good-bye to Brisbane, his adopted home of fourteen years, and making the move south to Melbourne in search of new ideas, inspiration and some audiences who haven’t heard all of his jokes. To mark the interstate shift, he will be performing eight local shows in the month of November with not one but two weekly residencies – at Pure Pop Records in St. Kilda every Friday night from 6pm – 8pm, and at The Retreat in Brunswick every Sunday evening from 4pm – 6pm.

    INTO HIS CUPS

Ben will also be playing a special one-off gig at the Retreat on Melbourne Cup Day – Tuesday the 1st of November – at 5.30pm – and his set will be broadcast LIVE on Melbourne Community Radio station PBS 106.7FM – you can also tune on online at www.pbsfm.org.au

NOBODY PUTS BUSBY IN THE CORNER

Rockhampton duo Busby Marou have been everywhere of late – touring relentlessly, signing record deals and getting airplay all over the place. They’ve kindly invited Salty to open a few shows on their upcoming national tour, because it was quite clear that he didn’t have enough on his plate already. See dates below!

    SOMETHING FOR THE WEEKEND?

As if all this madness wasn’t enough, Salter will also be supporting Something For Kate’s Paul Dempsey on a few dates of his upcoming solo tour – at the Corner Hotel in Melbourne this Sunday the 23rdof October, and at the Annandale Hotel in Sydney on the 2ndand 3rdof November.

    THE WHITE LION

Finally, tune into Rockwiz on SBS, Nov 5that 9.30pm to see Ben appearing with (and competing against) girl of the moment Kimbra – their stunning duet is not to be missed!

    FAINT PRAISE

If Bowie were to do a poetry reading of Henry Lawson classics, you’d be getting close to the sound of this solo debut for The Gin Club’s Ben Salter. It’s smooth and rich, with top notch pop sensibility but it manages a raw, outlawish, very Australian atmosphere at the same time. This is all the skill and colour of a gent who’s been making music for a very long time.”

    YEN MAGAZINE

Wordy and literate and full of rock ‘n’ roll narratives, Brisbane’s Ben Salter has made a solo debut album that is stories within stories… (the) muted discord is a constant, but his songs and A-list guest musicians are consistently great.”

    MELBOURNE MAGAZINE (THE AGE)

Given how prolific Ben Salter is (his bands the Gin Club, Giants of Science, Young Liberals, Hissy Fit and the Wilson Pickers have released 22 records all up), it makes sense he’s no slouch when it comes to releasing his first solo outing…The Brisbane songwriter cares little for convention, but don’t mistake that as lack of musicality – there’s stuff on here worthy of the “classic” tag, but he wants you to work for the payoff.”

    ROLLING STONE MAGAZINE

You must hear it. I can’t stop playing this record. I can give it no higher recommendation.”

    COURIER MAIL

    Cheery, teary and damn impressive.”

    9/10 – TRIPLE J MAGAZINE

The Cat is fantastic in its own right, but more tellingly it allows Salter to place a peg in the ground on which to build his own legacy.”

The Jezabels New Single Trycolour & Album Release Deals

By | Music News, News, The Jezabels | No Comments

The Jezabels New Single Trycolour & Album Release Deals With Mom + Pop (USA) and Dine Alone (Canada)

Trycolour is the second single from The Jezabels’ enormous, ARIA # 2 debut record, Prisoner. A spacious, shuddering track, Trycolour follows in the heavily bedded footsteps of Endless Summer, the first single, and a solid favourite of alternative radio.

“‘Trycolour is our 90’s song. At least it starts that way, and then morphs into a dystopian-pop-nightmare. But that’s fitting I think, because we are in many respects a band with strong contrasts. We wrote this song quite quickly, it was actually the first song to be completed on the album. I think that’s because it does have a natural type of movement to it. Nik’s drums are the guiding force for the rest of us to perform upon.” Samuel Lockwood.

Recorded in The Attic Studio in Sydney by long time collaborator & producer Lachlan Mitchell, and mixed by Peter Katis (Jonsi, The National, Interpol) at Tarquin Studio, Connecticut and Mastered by Ted Jensen at Sterling Sound, New York.

To say it’s been a huge couple of months for the Sydney based quartet would be a massive understatement. They have released their debut album to critical praise and a #2 ARIA Chart position; won two AIR Awards (including Best Independent Artist); reached gold sales status and received three ARIA nominations for their previous EP ‘Dark Storm’ and sold out their national headline tour to gushing praise.

Some artists who’ve enjoyed a steep upwards trajectory come unstuck when first attempting the voluminous space of The Forum, but on the evidence of this powerful, enthusiastically received show – the first of three at the 1500-capacity venue – The Jezabels have no such problem. The Sydney quartet gave physical weight to the emotional tempest that transfixes their debut album, Prisoner, and the room’s size barely mattered…The Jezabels’ immense sound isn’t just imposing, it also upends familiar assumptions. The Age

On top of all of that, they have peppered activity here with tour dates and release obligations in the USA, UK and Canada, and are elated to announce they have inked deals with US powerhouse label Mom + Pop, home to Neon Indian, Metric, Andrew Bird, Joshua Radin, Sleigh Bells, Ingrid Michaelson and Dine Alone in Canada joining the likes of City and Colour, Neon Indian, The Civil Wars, Alexisonfire, Tokyo Police Club, The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart.

As soon as they close their show at the Astor Theatre in Perth on Nov 5th they will re pack their bags with warmer clothes and jump a flight to the USA for shows, then onto Canada and the UK before landing on home soil in time for Homebake, Christmas, The Falls Music & Arts Festivals, Southbound and Big Day Out.

Henry Rollins – The Long March Australian Tour 2012

By | Henry Rollins, Music News, News | No Comments

Feel Presents Henry Rollins – The Long March Australian Tour 2012

For better than a quarter century, Henry Rollins has toured the world as a spoken word artist, as frontman for both Rollins Band and Black Flag and without a microphone, as a solitary traveller with insatiable curiosity bypassing the resorts in favour of places like Siberia and Senegal, or Burma and Bangladesh. His curiosity and hunger for experienced based knowledge, teamed with his willingness to travel, his no-holds-barred delivery of his opinions and observations, and wicked sense of humour make him one of the most inspiring and interesting commentators / entertainers of a generation.

He returns to Australia in 2012 for The Long March tour, a month long national odyssey – a stark contrast to the four intimate appearances he made in Sydney and Melbourne earlier this year, announced on an email, and which sold out in minutes.

Singer-songwriter, spoken word artist, writer, publisher, columnist, actor, radio host, television host, actor, activist and now photographer Henry Rollins is one of the most intriguing career chameleons of the modern world.

So far in 2011 he has toured the world delivering his provocative, humour riddled spoken word show; joined alternative kings Dinosaur Jr on the road interviewing them live on stage after each show; released Occupants, a collection essays and his own photos taken in Bangladesh, Burma, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Northern Ireland, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and elsewhere over the last few years; rolled out his weekly radio show on KCRW (most likely the only radio show in the world where you will hear Kraftwerk, Frank Sinatra, The Buzzcocks and some exotic local South African artist in the one playlist); travelled to Sudan as an ambassador for Drop In The Bucket

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zdAEd2Gyfeg; filmed a TV series about folk who own and consume exotic creatures called Animal Underworld for National Geographic; performed at Leeds, Reading and Edinburgh Festivals and spent a week in Haiti talking with locals who are still struggling to recover their lives from the earth quake that struck two years ago.

By the time he lands in Australia in April for The Long March tour, all of the above will be old news, and there will be a plethora of new tales to talk about. Rollins’ resume expands by the month, with his location changing by the day.

The Jezabels An Exhibition By Christopher Doyle

By | Music News, News, The Jezabels | No Comments

The Jezabels An Exhibition By Christopher Doyle
December 8th – 14th Mart Gallery Surry Hills NSW

Though Christopher Doyle is an internationally recognised and awarded designer – in 2009 he was named one of InDesign Magazine’s Top Ten Faces and Forces Of Design – fans of Sydney band The Jezabels will know him simply as the man responsible for the band’s stunning CD artwork, images of which will be on display at Mart Gallery this December.

“Fans and critics alike are always commenting on how beautiful our covers are. We agree and are so thankful that our relationship with Chris came about.” – Sam Lockwood, The Jezabels

Via his photography and design, Christopher has helped define The Jezabels’ aesthetic from day one, and for the first time ever audiences will have the opportunity to see the images in their original form as large format prints, framed and for sale, along with unreleased artwork and test shots.

“As a designer I find the process of designing for music fairly terrifying,” explains Christopher. “Essentially you are creating art, in response to art. It’s tricky and subjective ground, but thankfully the band have been able to articulate the themes around each release. The challenge for me has always been trying to ensure the imagery and artwork ‘look and feel’ like the music sounds. For me, there is drama and intensity, as well as darkness and lightness, to the band’s sound, and this is what I always attempt to visualise.”

“Chris is so important to us,” adds The Jezabels’ guitarist Sam Lockwood. “With our releases, he has repeatedly been able to understand the underlying message of our music, as well as our somewhat strange musical aesthetic. He has time and time again come up with beautiful, surreal, sublime and uncanny visual translations of the music we make. We talk about this between ourselves in the band – the way that Chris has helped us define what we do.”

From their debut EP, The Man Is Dead, to the recently released full-length record Prisoner, The Jezabels have become one of Australia’s most in-demand bands. Now, thanks to this exhibition, fans will be able to get closer to The Jezabels and, via the limited edition prints that are for sale, own a piece of the band’s history.

December 8th – 14th Mart Gallery Surry Hills NSW

156 Commonwealth St Surry Hills www.martgallery.com.au

    12pm – 5pm

Prisoner is in store now through MGM Distribution. The Jezabels are touring nationally now – all shows are sold out.

Pajama Club New Single – Daylight

By | Music News, News, News, Pajama Club | No Comments

Pajama Club Featuring Neil and Sharon Finn New Single  – Daylight
From the debut self-titled LP, available digitally and in store now through Lester Records

Daylight is the third single from Pajama Club’s self-titled debut album (out now through Lester Records). A swaggeringly sexy tune, beautifully showcasing the falsetto range of Neil, and its complimentary fit with Sharon’s signature smouldering vocal.

What started as bit of fun for Neil and Sharon, is rapidly becoming another solid branch of the ever expanding, Finn musical tree. Curiosity and intrigue, fading to reveal critical praise and an expanding, youthful fan base drawn into the psychedelic, indie sounds served up under the Pajama Club banner.

Last week Pajama Club were joined by special guest drummer, Ladyhawke for a performance on BBC TV’s Later With Jools Holland – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-ClKMpY36M

Neil and Sharon talk through each song on the album here: Pajama Club Track by Track http://www.youtube.com/user/PajamaClub#p/a/u/2/FoUyiHFvSTk

Some praise for Pajama Club – Pajama Club

“The singer appears to be enjoying a new freedom here, both behind the kit and out front. He’s playful with his voice, taking it into sweet falsettos one minute, distorted baritones the next, to the point where only the most discerning fan would be able to tell it’s him. From a Friend to a Friend is typical of the template: a steady disco-ish throb on which Sharon flings eerie bass, Neil throws on some spacey guitar licks and both top it with an irresistible chorus. Go Kart is another diamond. A primitive punk rumble on drums and Sharon’s staccato bass set the mood and tempo, with Sharon taking lead vocal early on. After a minute the song changes course, erupting into a glorious chorus. Anyone who has pondered just how Neil has crafted so many pop gems in his career will be no less impressed at how he has done so here, with just a handful of family grooves to work from.“

    THE AUSTRALIAN

“Pajama club is Finn at it again, this time with his new -to-playing music wife, Sharon, playing songs the pair began while Finn was on drums and she was on bass in their living room. While rhythm is at the core, there are variations aplenty in execution, from the gloopy electronic and late- 60’s atmospherics of The Game We Love To Play, through the low –slung feel of sonic youth in their cheeky pop mode of Go Kart to the lustful bump and grind of Tell Me What You Want. Whereas Can’t Put It Down Until It Ends finds the Finns rocking out, these are conditions is loosely funky in the mould of wordy rappinghood from Tom Tom Club (another husband-and-wife rhythm team you may remember) without ever locking into anything too rigid or earnest because they’re having too much fun.”

    SYDNEY MORNING HERALD (WEEKEND SPECTRUM)

“Only in the hands of Neil Finn – the antipodean Paul McCartney- can a lounge-room jam become a thing of such rich complexity. Finn and his wife Sharon started Pajama Club as an after dinner, wine fuelled lark: they’d bash out some songs in their self-titled debut is not as loose or indulgent its genesis implies. With the help of local muso Sean Donnelly, they’ve fleshed out these grooves into multi- layered psych-pop curiosities such as “daylight”, which proves that no matter how experimental he gets, Finn just cant keep a good melody down.”

    ROLLING STONE MAGAZINE

“Born from evenings spent with fine wine and sleepwear, Neil Finn’s collaboration with wife Sharon is a curious beast. Though the unprecedented electronic presence rarely obscures Finn’s masterful pop finesse (highlights include the seductive swagger of ‘Tell Me What You Want’, the dreamy ‘Golden Child’ and the melodic brilliance of ‘Daylight’), the record occasionally bears weak moments. An intriguing, entertaining mish-mash of misfired and gems. Download: Daylight.”

    TRIPLE J MAGAZINE

“This side project from Neil Finn is actually more fun then the last crowded house album. The songs that Finn initially built up on drums with his wife, Sharon, on bass have clattering grooves, fractured melodies and squelchy keyboards. Not too shabby for a middle-aged married couple blowing off some steam.”

     WHO MAGAZINE

Pajama Club’s self-titled debut album (vinyl, CD, digital) will be available in stores and online, independently on Lester Records. (Daylight is track #6)

Pajama Club will return to Australia in January / February to play St Jerome’s Laneway Festival, dates and details here www.lanewayfestival.com.au
